Finding Your Career Superpowers

Have you reached a time in your life where you need to redefine your career path? Perhaps you’ve taken some time off to be a mum and need a new direction or perhaps, you’ve found that one thing you love to do and finally feel ready to take the leap? These are questions that might be popping up and sometimes we need a push in the right direction to get us to realise the answers.

Your career path begins with identifying your superpowers. We all have superpowers. A superpower is a thing that you can do better as compared to others and has you standing out in the crowd. It is your competitive advantage and power when times get hard. Your superpowers can help you evolve your career.

Your career is fundamentally creating the startup for you, discovering ways to shine in the work environment to grow and succeed. The faster you can recognise your superpowers, the quicker you can improve and progress those skills and move forward to perform against your potential. Here is how to explore and work out your career path.

Discover your superpowers

Identifying your superpowers is very important for your career. Here are some tips that may help you discover your special qualities.

Recognise what you consider to be your best skills

Consider the skills that you use in your current work, the expertise outside the work, and the talent that you have used in the past. Add everything to the list that you can perform well such as writing, listening, persuading, problem-solving, connecting people, or anything that you seem to do effortlessly and often outshine others.

Point out the skills you feel passionate about

Highlight the skills you feel passionate about. Find ones that make you feel so excited that you can easily write a book or blog about them. These are the skills complemented with empowering emotions that have you jumping out of bed to make a difference. Also, point out the ones that make you feel enriched and fulfilled when you do them.

Strike through the ones you feel trouble focusing on

If you don’t give more than an hour to a particular skill, this is probably not your superpower. You need to look for those actions that you perform regularly. Many people push themselves to do the task that they actually don’t want to do. They may do this because they are good at it or simply because it is the one channel for them to earn a living. If there is something that you do by forcing yourself, remove it from the list.

Highlight the skills that other people identify as strengths

To use your superpower to develop your career, you need to find the one you are best at. If you like writing but struggle with sharing your thoughts, it may not be your superpower yet. The skill you have pointed out and is not crossed out in a list is your superpower that you can leverage to generate meaningful work.

How to find your career passion?

Once you know your superpower, you can identify how to find your career passion. A career plan is an approach that you develop to manage your knowledge, learning, and development throughout your work life. It consists of four stages and its purpose is to assist you to visualize the actions you require to accomplish your career goals.

A career plan consists of the following four stages:

  • Identifying your interests and skills
  • Identifying your strengths and derailers
  • Exploring your career ideas, the scope of work, and growth opportunities
  • Getting guidance towards making the right decision
  • Getting support in setting achievable and practical goals

It is important to plan your career path for various reasons. Having a career plan lowers the chances of making impulsive decisions. It sets a clear direction in planning your career path, it can infuse ideas when exploring new opportunities and it can expand your mindset to develop new superpowers when you are ready.

Rebecca has been a great help to me during my long and challenging fertility journey. From my very first session with her, I felt instantly at ease. Rebecca took great care to really understand my story, my journey so far, my disappointments and my hopes. I found her questions incredibly insightful and perceptive. Together, we uncovered a number of unresolved issues and she handled all our conversations with the utmost sensitivity and empathy. Rebecca is genuinely passionate about helping anyone with fertility issues and I have no hesitation in recommending her to anyone who is looking for someone authentic and caring to speak to.

I was really struggling with stress and not knowing how to manage it effectively. It felt like everything was spiralling out of control and I was constantly reacting emotionally to situations. However, after just a few coaching sessions with Rebecca, I feel like I've turned a corner. She has helped me to see things (and myself) from a different perspective and given me lots of guidance on living a more purposeful and stress-free life. I'm now much more mindful of my thoughts and actions, and after implementing all the tools learnt in our sessions, I’m finally learning how to manage my stress and am feeling calmer and more in control than ever before. If you're struggling with stress, I would highly recommend Rebecca- she's truly transformed my life!

My children, aged 11, did Life Coaching with Coach Andrea. Andrea has a soft touch - she was very approachable, gentle, kind and patient with them, offering valuable lessons on how to lead a healthy life, in both mind and body. The materials were presented in a fun way, in the format of games and videos, so it was understandable and digestible. Having another adult, rather than us parents, talk with the kids helped them be more receptive to all the topics too. The kids really enjoyed her pre-recorded meditations for night time to help them relax before bed. The pre-teen/teen years can be an emotional roller coaster ride for both kids and parents, but I feel that Andrea’s coaching (she even helped me with some great pointers) has really helped us prepare with valuable tools to better navigate what’s ahead! It’s definitely a worthwhile investment and would highly recommend to anyone and their kids!

Frolic for Life’s Kids Life Coaching with Coach Andrea was such a great experience for my pre-teen son. Coach Andrea helped him with a transition to a new school and then a transition to a new country one year later! It was so helpful for him to have so many tools in his back pocket to deal with all of the emotions and big feelings. Having an extra adult in his life who he could confide in and trust with his feelings was really important to us. Especially living far from extended family. He really appreciated the role she played for him and felt pretty cool having his own “life coach”. I highly recommend Coach Andrea. She is so excellent with this age group. She really knows how to talk to pre-teens and earn their respect and trust without judgement.

The moment I heard about Kids Life Coaching from Coach Andrea, I knew I had to sign my kid up for it. Coach Andrea helped to show my pre-teen the tools she needs to cope with all sorts of things life throws at her now, and prepare her for what it will throw at her in the future. I think it was a bit challenging to get things out of her in the beginning, but after building a relationship with her, it became easier. I recommend Kids Life Coaching with Coach Andrea strongly because it’s so important for kids to learn these coping tools, or as she puts it: Superpowers!
