In order to take on any new plans from a space of clarity, certainty and calmness, it is extremely crucial that we give ourselves a sense of closure to the past year.
Why closure? Simple. Closure allows us to acknowledge the journey, anchor our wins and learnings and move forward without carrying too much chatter in our heads. I found 2021 tougher than the previous year. I found myself struggling with the prolonged effects of the pandemic particularly in dealing with isolation. I noticed myself becoming more of an introvert. Had I developed some sort of social awkwardness? A review helped to bring a fresh start. A simple expression like: Thank you 2021, it was tough but I have a new outlook on things, can shift your focus and reframe your expressions.
My question to you today is, have you made the time to reflect on your journey over the last 12 months and put closure to 2021? If yes, congratulations and well done on doing so. If no, it’s not too late. We are still in the first 3 months of 2022 and it’s a good time to make the transition. Make the space and time to acknowledge YOU AND YOUR LOVED ONES – your family have been through a hell of a lot too!
I’d like to share how I completed my 2021 cycle and started afresh a month ago. Over Christmas, I revisited my photo album on my phone and found myself connecting to a wave of emotions as I scrolled through all that transpired each month (from January to December). I then decided to write a letter to myself and found it very cathartic. I picked out one image for each month and took the time to observe my expressions. What was “I smiling about, why was I at that dinner, what was I celebrating, wow I think I’ve lost weight, why did I look so tired”, etc…. Going through this exercise, I closed off each month, wrote a summary of my year, thanked myself for my resilience, my patience and vigorous commitment to pull through, and anchored my growth. I am a different person today with new learnings and have reframed my words to be forward-looking rather than in coping mode. How refreshing!
You can choose to do the same or record a voice message to yourself on your phone. The main idea behind this exercise it to get it out of your system and create mind space for new things. These days, you can use a software on your phone to create a collage of photos throughout the year. It allows you to recognise and realise your learnings. A reflection of 2021 and you can name it “Chapter 2021”. You can choose a title that befits your journey! Remember to be specific about a few things that really shifted your mindset. Take onboard the positives and the learnings and bring that momentum into this year with energy and rigour. It’s about holding space for the good stuff and shedding all the bad stuff – leaving it behind so that you can focus on making this year happen for you.
I wish you the very best and lots of fun while you revisit yourself!
